Wood Wake Live Edge Tables

Every Wood Wake live edge table is made with excellence. At the heart of our endeavors is the drive to combine the beauty of nature with the artistry of human craftmanship. This process involves taking prized wood that is both locally and sustainably sourced and transforming it into a piece of furniture, according to the specific needs of our clients. Each slab is hand selected. At every turn of the building process we take no shortcuts, all to ensure the long lasting durability of your table.

The Process: Masterful craftsmanship from start to finish

From start to finish, every step in the creation of our live edge tables is carefully considered. Beginning with the sourcing process, we work with local vendors and mills around the U.S. to obtain ethically sourced wood.

All of the wood we use at Wood Wake is kiln dried. Why is this important? It is an involved and costly process to ensure the wood is below a certain moisture content and ready to work with. Wood that is not fully dry will crack and warp over time. Many competitors use air dried wood. Though the wood may seem dry, and even look beautiful after it is finished, it will not stand the test of time. It is imperative to use a kiln to fully dry the innermost parts of the slab. This process also kills any living organisms inside the wood. The last thing you want is a bug to crawl out of the slab onto the dinner table at your next family gathering!

Once we have our wood kiln dried, we take it to a local mill to be planed (flattened). Upon getting back to the shop, we need to clean up the edges of the slabs. All bark needs to be removed. Any holes and voids are cleaned out to ensure no loose pieces are present. If this is a slab only table we proceed to the next step. However, if this will be an epoxy table, which is 90% of our tables, we proceed to build a form to the appropriate size, as to hold in the resin until it cures hard. We mix this part A and part B liquid resin, along with the desired color of the client, and pour into the form. After about a week, its ready to pull out. From here we take our project back to our local mill to go on their CNC machine. This ensures the piece is completely flat. Once back at the shop we install steel bar C-Channels. These are installed into the table on the underside going across the grain to furthermore prevent any warping over time.

Next we need to sand our project. The sanding process is the most time consuming of all steps. We use a vacuum suctioned orbital sander as to eliminate any micro scratches that could occur from dust while sanding. After sanding, the table is rigorously cleaned, and ready for the sealer to be applied. We use a high quality natural oil and wax finish when sealing our tables. After this is cured, we apply 3 coats of a ceramic coating sealer. This furthermore makes the table resistant to scratches, even fingerprint resistant, and leaves the table feeling smooth as butter.

The final step is attaching the table base. Rather than simply screwing it into the table itself, which would cause cracking over time, we bore out small holes and install threaded inserts into the wood. The screws then go through the base plate and into the threaded inserts. This is a step we see most of our competitors take the shortcut on.

Live Edge Wood Table Design and Fabrication

A Wood Wake live edge table is designed and fabricated after discussions with each customer.

These discussions are informative, collaborative, and instructive, as well as reassuring and fun. Typically, the customer provides a general indication of size, leg choice, and wood species, as well as their thoughts on other specific design details. From there, we prepare a computer rendering of the live edge walnut table showing all the specs outlined in our discussion. The final details are put together and then submitted to the customer for approval. This is a key component of the process as it allows our clients to see a simulation of their live edge table before it is physically fabricated, allowing them to make final changes to their design. Once we receive client approval, we are ready to commence the hard work of composing the table.

Our clients are integral to our designs. We see the process as a collaboration between your tastes and needs, and our skill and artistry. Without either element, our live edge wood tables would simply not be the wonders they are.
